Proterozoic Eon |
The Proterozoic Eon saw the evolution of the first green algae (Charophyta), the ancestors of all land plants.
As you can see, Algae first evolved when a diflagellated paramecium enveloped a cyanobacterium. |
The mounds of stone you can see are called stromatolites, which are biofilms of cyanobacteria. The slime you can see was algae. By the end of the eon, algal mats have spread across much of the ocean and films of slime accumulated in wet areas. |
