Triassic Period |
As said before, during the mid-Permian Period, there were major changes to the flora of the world. Supercontinent Pangaea formed, and the inland sea and extensive swamps all but disappeared except for on a remote string of equatorial islands.
Gymnosperms took over and many present genera of plants like Araucaria and yews evolved at the time. Many of the primitive trees, like Lepidodendron, went extinct, to be replaced with seed ferns like Glossopteris and Cheirolepidiaceae. Near the end of the Triassic Period, there was a small extinction, killing off the Glossopteris.
